The definitive fictional biography of Kobe Bryant, with two forewords and an afterword by Kobe Bryant. Bean's premise is that Bryant is a contemporary incarnation of Nietzsche's ubermensch, a striving and becoming toward a higher form of man, a model for all those who seek an escape from the postmodern malaise of modern life. Christy's extended study of Bryant ultimately affects the author himself, who travels to Los Angeles in search of the man and the ideal.

It was engaging and fun and insightful and feeling and hip and good for reading on the loop. I saw the others: they were reading The Hunger Games and Jaws and something called Sacre Bleu!--the words ballooning across the cover in a chintzy cartoon font--and I was reading bean, an obscure document whose synopsis contains the term "postmodern milieu", one written right here in chicago, new literature happening right in my backyard, literature that's well-read and intertextual and kind of meta depending on who you ask, literature which wears its influences on its sleeves without fear, words brave enough to be tepid and inconclusive, ah, what joy!

as for the book itself? it's worthy of the meta-feelings it inspired in me. it was a good read even regardless of the gifts its status bestowed. it compelled me to continue after I'd already gotten off the train and walked through the apartment door. compelled me to write this review even!

+1 for bean and +1 for christ christy.

Bean The definitive fictional biography of Kobe Bryant by John Christy- Review

I have always been a fan of Los Angeles Lakers basketball star Kobe Bryant and I was asked to review a book entitled “ Bean The definitive fictional biography of Kobe Bryant” and I was thrilled. This novel was not portraying Kobe Bryant and he basketball skills it was more written about who his character is and his relentless pursuit of self-elevation of himself. Let’s review shall we.

After receiving “Bean The definitive fictional biography of Kobe Bryant” I could not wait to dive right into the book. After reading it, I was more drawn in to the book itself and moved my focus away from the Kobe Bryant I see playing on the court and focus more on the material I was reading. The character development and understanding of the author really gave this novel substance and made it very interesting.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book. I encourage all my readers to take the time and read this book. For me personally, it was fun to read and very hard to put down. Authors sometimes go “Over Your Head” with the writing style in general or it gets so repetitive it gets boring. The word play by author John Christy made it very easy to read but yet was very deep and enlightening. Overall 3-5 Stars
The concept behind Bean was enough to intrigue me, but the actual writing was what drew me into the book. It manages to be erudite without being pretentious, allowing a relatively uneducated reader like myself to understand what it means to be a Nietzschean ubermensch as well as why Kobe Bryant fits that description. That being said, I began to tire of the more philosophical bent of the book. Just in time, Christy shifts it to a narrative focus, bringing the author (or at least the first person speaker) to the forefront as a character, not just a voice. The story was gripping, with interesting and full characters.

This book is not just for basketball lovers, as I had no interest in the NBA, the Lakers, or Kobe before reading it. I now, however, find myself intrigued by Kobe as a person and the ubermensch as a subject.
