It is nearing the turn of the 22nd century, and Sherlock Holmes isn't having much luck trying to be a detective. Social networking has morphed into a single, centralized, government-linked platform called The Archive. Every citizen has a Personal Archive File, which records all the significant (and most of the insignificant) moments of their lives and is open to everyone else. Birth records, school records, medical and financial records (virtually everything anyone could want to know about a person) are readily accessible to anyone who takes the time to look someone up. In a world that is ostensibly without secrets, what use are the keen deductive skills of Sherlock Holmes when they rarely reveal anything about a person a quick Archive search wouldn't? Add to that the recent development of a new crime-solving computer program, and human detectives are on the cusp of extinction. Unable to make a living at his chosen profession, Sherlock often falls into despair and abuses cocaine and morphine to quiet his mind.
Sherlock takes on a case involving a prolific blackmailer, and the lengths to which he goes to resolve the matter reveal a dark, incredibly manipulative side of him that leaves John Watson doubting whether he ever knew his dear friend at all. Sherlock’s actions set in motion a catastrophic sequence of events that threaten to destroy his relationship with John, which both men are coming to realize is deeply felt romantic love.
Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Paper Journal is a clever re-imagining of some of the classic Sherlock Holmes stories that expertly balances an action-packed adventure set in an eerily familiar dystopian future with a delicate love story.

A unique Sherlock Holmes pastiche, very well written, lots of detail and story build-up, but not boring or slow. I enjoyed the very clever use of the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle writings, but moving the story into the late 21st century, a dark, Big Brother-esque and unsettling, prophetic time where everyone knows everything about everyone else, every moment of their lives logged onto their Life Management Device.The story also heavily focuses on the deep growing friendship between Sherlock and John, both of whom realize eventually that what they feel is love. It’s a theme that even ACD included in his stories, these two individuals, damaged either physically, mentally or emotionally in some way, finding completeness and healing with each other.
The second half of the book focuses heavily on “Johnlock”, and also a deceptive, and sexually graphic, relationship that Sherlock takes on with a criminal mastermind’s female assistant in order to get closer to her boss in his murder investigation. There are very explicit sex scenes, something that most fans of SH pastiches are not usually expecting - some of it does relate directly to the plot, but most is rather gratuitous. Personally, I’d prefer that authors tone down the sex narration and let the readers fill in the blanks with their imagination, after all, the brain is the most powerful sex organ!
I really enjoy the overall writing style of Mr. Kitteridge, and look forward to his future Sherlock Holmes stories!

This book is 10/10 would read again. It's definitely worth the time and money it will bring great emotion to the reader.
A delicate book about love, doubts, solitude, without romance, with adventures and crimes, set in a not to far future where privacy is banned... Amazing ! I am impatient to read the next one
Great book, little pricey, but I feel it was worth it. You should check out Kitteridge's other book on Wattpad (Before Holmes met Watson), it happens before this book, and you can even read a preview of this book on wattpad. Seeing how I got the 'first' book (before Holmes met Watson), free, I felt this book was worth the money.
I liked this novel but come away thinking I missed something. First off, as with the back history book written by the same author (which I highly recommend), this book is M/M ... therefore, why the M/F journal? POSSIBLE SPOILERS I understand what Holmes was trying to get Watson to understand, especially when they're at a changing point in their relationship but I have to admit, I skimmed through the journal. I also got confused as to the timing of events for the actual mystery ... along with a bit of disappointment that Holmes got so caught up in himself and actually did not solve this mystery. In the end, I think the book had a bit too much angst between the M/Cs. These are the reasons for the 4 instead of 5 stars. Yet this being said, there was a lot of mature insight into people (not just characters). I found myself highlighting and noting on my quite a few passages that were applicable to my own life. When a book leaves me thinking, it's a good book. Overall, even with my misgivings, I would recommend this book.
